Dalecarlia

Official Number
70965

The Dalecarlia was a full-rigged iron ship built by the Barrow Shipbuilding Company. She was launched on the 20th May 1875, Yard No.21. The ship was owned by Edward Bates & Sons and was registered at Liverpool.

The Dalecarlia sailed from Calcutta on the 30th January 1876, the return leg of her maiden voyage, bound for London with a cargo of tea, linseed and jute. She had a crew of about thirty men, under the command of Captain Thurper. The ship was never seen thereafter, it being supposed that she foundered in the heavy gales that prevailed in the Indian Ocean in March. The Dalecarlia was posted "Missing" in September 1876. The loss on the vessel and cargo was about £40,000.
