The Cumberland Pacquet and Ware's Whitehaven Advertiser, Tuesday, 24th July 1849, page 3;

" About noon on Saturday last, a handsome substantially-built schooner, named the Brothers, was launched from the building yard of Messrs.Petty and Postlethwaite, at Ulverston. The new vessel is to be commanded by Mr.Edward Storey, of that town, late master of the schooner Bee, and from her size seems to be well-calculated for the general coasting and channel trade. From the long experience and well-earned reputation of the builders there is no doubt but she will prove herself both good in quality and something more than average in her sailing qualifications. The vessel left the ways in beautiful style, amidst the cheers of a large concourse of spectators. "

The Brothers was owned by William Postlethwaite of Millom from 1873 until her loss in 1882.

The Brothers departed Duddon on the evening of Wednesday, 19th July 1882, bound for Saltney with a cargo of cast iron ingots. She was under the command of Capt.Peter Jones, who had his wife and two seamen, Edward Morris and James Martin, aboard. All the crew belonged to Connah's Quay. Caught in a rising gale, the schooner was off Piel Island later in the evening. The steamer Ardeer, Capt.Ratcliffe, was leaving Barrow, and was about to cross the Piel bar, bound for Bowling. She was owned by Bargate & Co., of Barrow, and was a regular trader between Barrow and the Clyde. At one o'clock on the morning of the 20th, the two vessels collided, about three-quarters of a mile SW from the Walney lighthouse. The schooner had changed course suddenly, and had put herself across the bow of the steamer. The force of the collision was such that the schooner was almost cut in two, and she sank in less than two minutes. Although some cries were heard, the steamer's crew were not able to save anybody. The bodies of the master's wife and Morris were washed ashore on Walney the following day.
