Scottish Maid

The Scottish Maid was built by Hannah at Garlieston, Scotland in January 1865, and was owned by Barrow's James Fisher throughout her life. She was described in her launch report as a "clipper brigantine", of 240 tons burthen. The Scottish Maid was lost 15 miles ESE of Hartlepool by collision on the 24th November 1878.

From the Times newspaper, Thursday, 28th November 1878, page 6 :

" DISASTERS AT SEA - Information has reached Barrow of the loss of the schooner Scottish Maid, Captain Thomas Griffiths, owned by Messrs.Fisher and Sons, Barrow. She was on a voyage from Duddon to Middlesbrough with iron ore, and when 15 miles off Hartlepool, on Sunday morning, she came into collision with the schooner Ann, of Bristol. The Scottish Maid sank in a few minutes afterwards, but the crew were all saved by means of boats and the assistance rendered by the crew of the Ann. "
