Duke of Buccleuch | Official Number
56940 |
The Ulverston Mirror, Saturday, 16th March 1867,
p5;
" SHIP LAUNCH - A fine brig was launched from the yard of Mr.
J.Rawlinson, Hindpool, Barrow, on Saturday last. She will carry about 400
tons dead weight and is intended for the Mediterranean trade. She was christened
the "Duke of Buccleuch" and Capt.B.Wilding, late of the schooner
Joseph,
will be her commander. Lunch was at the house of Mr.J.Pete, foreman of
the yard. All shipwrights and men belonging to the yard had supper at the
Royal Hotel."
The Duke of Buccleuch was the last vessel built at the Rawlinson's
shipbuilding yard. She was originally part of her builder's fleet,
but Rawlinson closed down his yard and sold his ships in the early 1870's. The Duke of Buccleuch
was owned by W.Anderson, of Cape Town, South Africa, in 1871.
Welsh Mariners website names two seamen "supposed drowned" when the Duke of Buccleuch
went missing in July 1871. The master was Captain William Johns and the
mate was Thomas Phillips.
