A vessel, the Ellen & Sarah, was in port at Barrow at the time of the 1881 Census. Her crew were John Randolph McLester, master, and Michael Smith, mate.
The Times, Weds., 22nd March, 1882, page 10;
" The Ellen & Sarah, of Barrow, from Workington,
laden with rails, has arrived at Fleetwood with the loss of foretopmast
and all sails and spars attached. The mate states that the master was lost
overboard yesterday morning in a hevy gale."
