The Frodsham Trader was a sloop, owned in Ulverston at the time of her loss.
Soulby's Ulverston Advertiser, 28th July 1859;
" SHIPWRECK - During the storm of Tuesday night or rather about
1 o'clock on Wednesday morning, the sloop Frodsham Trader of this
port was overtaken whilst on her way from Barrow to Saltney with iron ore.
She was struck by a heavy sea, which swept the deck, carrying away everything
except her master (Needham) and his son, the only two on board, who at
once took to the boat. Immediately after she was struck she began
to fill and went down before the two had time to get clear of her, and
who were then left entirely at the mercy of the boisterous waves. Fortunately
however, after being buffeted about for a considerable time, they were
drifted ashore at Grange, drenched from head to foot and nearly exhausted
by fear and fatigue. On landing they were kindly treated and reached
home in safety today. When the storm set in they put the little craft
about with the intention of running into Piel or Barrow for safety, but
were unable to reach before she was struck. She belonged to Mr.John
Needham of this town, father to the master, and we regret to state was
not insured. "
