The Mary was a sloop-rigged flat built by Samuel Speakman at Preston in 1837. At her launch, the subscribing owner with 32 shares, was John Bond, master mariner from Hesketh Bank. Other owners included James Ashburner, maltster from Bardsea; Michael Bond, mariner, Ulverston; Thomas Roper, shipowner, Newland. Capt. Henry Bond sen. was the first commander of the vessel.
From Soulby's Ulverston Advertiser, Thursday 27th September 1849, page 2:
The Mary was lost on 17th October 1866, seven miles west of Piel Light. The following month, a report in Lloyd's List read:"DISTRESSING CASE.—James Cleminson, 27 years of age, a sailor belonging to the Sloop Mary, Captain Michael Redhead, of this port, was on Saturday morning last, during the detention of the vessel from contrary winds at the Magazines, opposite Liverpool, attacked with Asiatic Cholera, and although medical advice and attendance was early procured, and every assistance his comrades and others could render given, he died on shipboard, within ten hours from the commencement of the attack. The poor man has left a wife (residing in the Back Ellers,) far advanced in pregnancy, and one child to lament his untimely death, and who are in much need of the kind support ol the public. Any donations left at our office, for the widow will be gratefully received."
A vessel's mast, about 8 feet out of water, supposed to belong to the Mary (sloop), was seen on the 3rd. Nov, bearing WSW from Walney Light, distant about 5 miles, and two miles and a half from Dilpsford buoy.
