The Livingstone was a three-masted schooner built by Matthew Simpson at his Glasson Dock shipyard. Her building began on the 1st March 1875, her keel being laid on 24th April the same year. However, she was not launched until Monday, 14th May 1877. She was to be managed by Edmund Porter, of Fleetwood, and was the ninth such vessel built by Simpson. The schooner was copper-fastened and copper-sheathed, and was launched fully-rigged and ready to sail. She was intended for the copper ore trade to the Pomaron River, and her hold was fitted with a platform for this purpose.  The first commander of the Livingstone was Capt.L.Fish, who arrived in the Saxon Maid at Glasson Dock from Huelva shortly after the launch. The schooner departed on her first voyage a month later. The Livingstone had cost £3667.4s.0d. to build but was sold for £3400.0s.0d., a  loss of £267.4s.0d.
