The Livingstone was a three-masted schooner built by Matthew Simpson at his Glasson Dock shipyard. Her building began on the 1st March 1875, her keel being laid on 24th April the same year. However, she was not launched until 12th May 1877 and departed on her first voyage a month later. The schooner had cost £3667.4s.0d. to build but was sold for £3400.0s.0d., a  loss of £267.4s.0d.
