Laxey Mines

Official Number
27258

The Laxey Mines was built in 1860 by Messrs.Fullarton at the Ayr Shipbuilding Yard, for Mr.John Moore, of Douglas, Isle of Man. She was almost certainly designed for the fruit trade to the Azores, as the Ayr shipyard was noted for fast craft, and speed was vital for the fruit schooners due to their perishable cargo. Six years later the same owner purchased another fruit schooner, the Maid of Mona, from the same shipyard.

The Laxey Mines was abandoned 16 miles SE of Langness Point on the evening of 1st December 1876. She had left Laxey Beach the previous day, under the command of Capt.John Quirk, and with a cargo of ore for Swansea. She began leaking in a severe gale, and the crew took to their small boat when the schooner was almost awash. They landed safely at Derbyhaven eight hours later.
