The Bassenthwaite was a brig of 121 tons, built at Maryport by Ritson & Co., and launched on the 14th September 1833. In 1834/5 the brig sailed under the command of Capt.Mitchinson from Liverpool to St.Domingo and Haiti, returnng to Falmouth, then to Antwerp (see Source 2).

On the 7th April 1836, on passage from Liverpool for Quebec, the Bassenthwaite, Capt.Mitchinson, struck on the Crim Rock, Isles of Scilly. The vessel sank immediately. One man and a boy took to the rigging, and were drowned. The master and nine crew abandoned the vessel in their own boats and reached the safety of St.Agnes Island.
