The brig Amethyst, of Maryport, under the command of Capt.Hodgson, was bound from for Liverpool from Quebec, carrying a cargo of pearl ashes, flour and wheat. On the 28th November 1833, in a heavy W gale,  she was driven up the Bristol Channel and stranded in Swansea Bay. The Swansea pilot boat William 4th, commanded by John Mitchell, went alongside and saved Capt Hodgson and his crew of ten, who were safely landed in Swansea harbour. The vessel was refloated a few days later and beached near the West Pier where her cargo was discharged. The Lifeboat Institution awarded pilot Mitchell £2 for his efforts, and £1 each to his three crewmen.
