The Matchless was a schooner built at Dumfries in 1812. When she was lost in December 1821 she was described as a Maryport vessel, owned by a Mr.Tyson. The Matchless, under the command of Capt.Joseph Gunson, had left Workington with a crew of six and two passengers on the 20th December, and foundered off St.Bee's Head, with the loss of all aboard. The masts of the wreck were sighted by Capt.Kay, of the Fisher, on the 22nd December, and on the 9th January he and the former mate of the Matchless took a boat from Maryport to the wreck to confirm her identity.
