Chanaral

The Chanaral was a barque built at the Ritson shipyard, Maryport in 1862. Whilst loading at Arica Bay (West Indies) for Liverpool on the 8th June 1864 she broke her anchor chains and was driven ashore to become a total loss.

The Times, Saturday, 30th July 1864, page 11;

" TACNA, June 21. - The Chanaral, of Maryport, broke her anchor chain during a heavy swell in the port of Arica on the night of the 8th of June, and drove ashore, and became a total wreck. Crew saved; but in rendering assistance four of the crew of the Perfila were lost. "
