The Coeur de Lion was a barque built by Kelsick Wood at Maryport in 1834. She was owned by Fisher & Co. of Liverpool, where the vessel was registered. In 1838 the barque was coppered and had damage repaired, and in 1839 she was listed as sailing on the transatlantic route to Montreal.

The Coeur de Lion sailed from Quebec bound for Liverpool on the 28th May 1847. She was under the command of Capt.Kendall and carried a cargo of wheat and flour. The vessel went aground at Langloise Island in the Gulf of St.Lawrence on the 6th June.  The master managed to land 350 tons of cargo before the vessel capsized, and the local newspaper reported that he and the crew had to stand guard to protect it from theft by the local inhabitants.
