The Cyclops was a snow built at Maryport by John Sanderson in 1814. She was registered at Maryport throughout her life, and operated in a variety of foreign trades, ending her career in the 1830's in the trade to Quebec, carrying emigrants out and returning with timber.
In July 1827 the Cyclops, Capt.Spencer, arrived at Quebec from Ross with 220 settlers.
In August 1830 the Cyclops, Capt.Cochran, arrived at Quebec from Sligo with 182 settlers.
In December 1831 the Cyclops was bound from Quebec for Limerick
with a timber cargo. On the 18th, in heavy weather off the West coast of
Ireland, the master, James Cochran, was washed overboard, and the carpenter
died of exposure. Three days later the vessel was wrecked at Dunbeg, Co.Clare.
The surviving crew, seven men and two boys, were eventually taken off the
wreck by a boat manned by the Coastguard. Lieutenant Charles Autridge,
RN, the local Coastguard commander, was awarded the RNLI Silver Medal for
this rescue. He had taken a gig with a crew of five and succeeded, after
three hours, and at the third attempt, in rescuing the stranded crew from
the rigging of the wrecked vessel.
