Dalemain
Official Number
24129

The Dalemain was a barque built at Maryport by Robert Ritson and launched on the 27th September 1851. She was owned by David Laidman, and was the fourth vessel built by Ritson for this owner. The Dalemain had been built for the Liverpool-Jamaica trade (see Source 1). She was registered at Liverpool and her first master was Capt.Joseph Varty (see Source 2).

From the Times newspaper, Friday, 17th October, 1862, page 9 :

" The Dalemain, from Liverpool to Guatemala, is on shore at Arklow Bank, and likely to be a total wreck."
Source 6 reports that the Court of Inquiry subsequent to the wreck, held at Dublin, blamed the master, Capt.William McWilliams, for the loss. The barque had left Liverpool on the 11th October and had been tacking between the Welsh and Irish coasts in a full gale. The master had only cast the lead shortly before the vessel struck, and the court felt that if he had done so earlier then the loss might have been averted.
