Eliza Moore | Official Number
24908 |
The Eliza Moore was a barque built at Maryport in 1846 by Kelsick Wood. She began her life in the trade to China.
The Cumberland Pacquet, Tuesday, 23rd February 1846;
" On Tuesday the 16th inst. was launched from the
shipbuilding yard of Messrs.Kelsick Wood and Sons, at Maryport, a
remarkably handsome and substantial built vessel of 418 tons register
measurement. This vessel was constructed for and built under the
immediate supervision of Capt.Thomas Asbridge, of Maryport, late
commander and part-owner of the fast-sailing ship Bella Marina,
in the India and China trade, in which vessel (built by Messrs.Wood) he
has justly acquired the reputation of having made some of the quickest
passages on record. Judging from what is nautically termed the entrance
forward and run aft, together with the beautifullly and skillfully
drawn lines of the vessel he is now about to take charge of as managing
owner, she promises to be second to none in sailing and great carrying
properties, of the many vessels that have been set afloat by those
eminent builders. She made a beautiful launch and was christened the Eliza Moore
by Charles Ray, Esq., of Lesson Hall, in compliment to the lady of
George Moore, Esq., of London, a shareholder. She is barque-rigged, and
will stand 12 years A1 at Lloyd's, is sheathed with Muntz's patent
yellow metal over three streaks of the bends, is thoroughly
copper-fastened and is intended for the China trade. "
About 1862 the Eliza Moore was sold foreign, renamed Josefina and registered at Havana, Cuba.
