"SHIP LAUNCH AT MARYPORT.- A splendid new vessel was launched from the building yard of Messrs.R.Ritson & Co. at Maryport, on Saturday last. She is named the Ganjam, after a promontery of that name on the river Ganges. Her burthen, per register, new measurement, is 895 tons, old measurement, 905 tons, and she has a beautiful figure head by Brooker, representing an eastern personage, with a scimiter and turban. The execution of this work is in Mr.Brooker's superior style. This splendid vessel is the largest yet built at Maryport, her extreme length being 178 feet 11 inches; length of keel 171 feet, being 6 feet longer than the John Curry; breadth of beam 32 feet 9 inches; depth of hold abaft 21 feet 6 inches, forward 20 feet 6 inches. She was built for Captain Johnstone and is intended for the China trade. The Ganjam is a beautiful model of a vessel, and as a specimen of naval architecture has not been excelled in the county. Many people assembled to witness the launch, the hill in the neighbourhood of the yard and every place from which a good view could be obtained being crowded with spectators."In January 1862 the Ganjam, under the command of Capt.Tickle, arrived at Sydney NSW from London with some passengers (see Source 5 for crew list).
The vessel is listed in Lloyds Register of Shipping until 1874.
