The Daily News, Friday, 19th September 1851;

" I beg to report the total loss of the barque George Buckham, of Whitehaven, while on her voyage from Newcastle (New South Wales) to Hong Kong, with a cargo of coals, having struck at 10.30 p.m. on the night of the 30th May, on a coral reef not laid down on the chart, lat.8 deg.N., long.154 deg.12 min.E., and shortly became a total wreck. The crew left in two boats, and after being all night at sea, were picked up by the English barque Duke of Roxburgh, of London, Captain Kirsop, from Sydney to Manilla. Two boats, a sail and about 6,000 dols. of specie in dollars, on board for Hong Kong, were saved from the wreck before she broke up. From Captain Kirsop the crew and myself have experienced the greatest kindness.

John Matches, Late commanding the George Buckham, Messrs.Ker & Co., Agents for Lloyds, Manilla."
