The James Ray was a brig built at Maryport by Kelsick Wood, launched
9th March 1833.
The James Ray was abandoned after developing a leak whilst on
a voyage from Trieste for Liverpool with a grain cargo in 1852. The vessel
was abandoned off Mount Etna, her crew taking to the longboat and eventually
arriving at Malta. Her master at the time of loss was Capt.Laing.

Son, 234 tons.

Wreck reported in the "Cumberland Pacquet and Ware's Whitehaven Advertiser",
Tuesday, 6th Aprl 1852, page 3 - gives name as "James Rae", and states
that she belonged to Maryport.
