The Cumberland Pacquet and Ware's Whitehaven Advertiser, Tuesday, 23rd February 1847, page 3;
" On Wednesday the 17th instant a splendid new vessel was launched
from the building yard of Messrs.Robert Ritson & Co., of Maryport,
and was named the John Matthie. She is of 500 tons register, and is also intended for the East India and China trade."
The John Matthie was a full-rigged ship and was launched at Maryport on the day following the launch of the Eliza Moore. She operated in the trade to India for Sparks and Co., who had also
owned the Hugh Matthie.
The John Matthie arrived at Port Adelaide in 1855 from London.
By 1865 the John Matthie had been sold to Glasgow owners. She was abandoned at sea in 1867, probably on a return voyage from the Caribbean.
