John Wood | Official Number
26091 |
The John Wood was a ship built at Maryport by John Wood, launched on Wednesday, 30th August, 1848.
The Cumberland Pacquet and Ware's Whitehaven Advertiser, Tuesday,
12th September, 1848, page 3;
" A splendid new ship was launched from the building-yard of
Messrs.Wood, at Maryport, on Wednesday week, of 492 tons old, and
595 tons new measurement, called the John Wood, in compliment to
Mr.Wood, the builder. The vessel was christened by Mrs.Joseph Sanderson,
of Cockermouth, and made a beautiful launch. The new ship is in all respects
worthy of her eminent builders, will stand 13 years at Lloyd's, and is
owned by Mr.John Archer, Esq., of Liverpool, being the sixth vessel built
by Messrs.Wood for that gentlemen, amounting to upwards of 2000 tons. The
figurehead is an excellent likeness of the gentleman after whom the vessel
is named, and reflects the highest credit upon the talents of Mr.Brooker,
the carver."
It is possible that Capt.Joseph Mundle, formerly of the Martha,
was master of the John Wood in 1850. His son, George, was born on
the 30th September, 1850, on board the John Wood in Whampoa Anchorage
(Pearl River, Canton, China).
The John Wood seems to have been lost in the Indian Ocean after leaving Calcutta for Mauritius in December 1861.
The Liverpool Mercury, Monday, 16th December 1861;
"John Wood, for the Mauritius, put back to Calcutta, very leaky."
The Liverpool Mercury, Wednesday, 7th May 1862;
"The John Wood has not arrived at the Mauritius."
The Liverpool Mercury,Thursday, 22nd May 1862;
"Lloyd's, May 20 - The John Wood, Dawson, cleared from Calcutta 10th
December, for the Mauritius, and has not since been heard of."
