The Joseph Sanderson was a ship built at Maryport in 1848 by K.Wood & Sons..

From the "Cumberland Pacquet and Ware's Whitehaven Advertiser", Tuesday, 14th March 1848, page 3 :

" A very handsome and splendidly-finished ship was on Thursday last, the 7th instant, launched from the building-yard of Messrs.K.Wood & Sons, Maryport, intended for the East India and China trade under the command of Capt.Sharp, of Allerby, called the Joseph Sanderson. This gem of a vessel was built for John Sparks, esq., of Clifton, and was christened by General Wyndham, of Cockermouth Castle, in compliment to one of the owners, Mr.Joseph Sanderson, of Cockermouth, whose name she bears. The vessel registers 536 tons, stands 13 years A1 at Lloyd's, and is coppered and copper-fastened to the bends. Her figure-head is considered an excellent likeness of the gentleman after whom she is named; and in point of model, materials, and finish she is admirably calculated to sustain the well-earned reputation of her builders. The day was remarkably fine, and an immense concourse of spectators witnessed the interesting spectacle. The workmen in the yard were liberally treated by the spirited owners of the vessel; and shortly after the launch a numerous party of gentlemen sat down to a sumptuous dinner at the Golden Lion Hotel, under the presidency of John Sparks, Esq., the vice-chair being able filled by John Wood, Esq., one of the firm by whom the vessel was built, and spent a most agreable evening."
