Anne Lowther
Official Number
44224

The Anne Lowther was built in March 1862 at the shipyard of Lumley Kennedy & Co. in Whitehaven. She was a brig, and was felted and sheathed in zinc from her first year, indicating an early career in deepwater sailing. By 1867 she was listed as a coastal vessel in Lloyds Register, which named her owner as T.Kelly and her masters a Capt. J.More and Capt. J.Hodgson.

In Lloyds Register her masters are named as J. Moore (1862-1867), J.Hodgson and R.Dalrymple (1867-8). In the 1867/8 register she is listed as "wrecked".

The Anne Lowther sailed out of Cardiff for Barcelona on the 25th October 1867. She was listed "missing" in The Times on the 16th April 1868:  "Missing Ships - The Anne Lowther, which sailed from Huelva for Liverpool on the 8th of January ...". Once a vessel was listed as missing then the crew could be declared dead, and on the 17th April 1868 her Captain, Robert Dalrymple, was "supposed drowned since the vessel had not been heard of since the 8th January 1868" (see Source 2).
