The Candidate was a brig built by T.& J. Brocklebank at Bransty, Whitehaven, launched in June, 1820. Her early voyages were to Brazil under the command of Capt.J.Bacon, and in her third year of service she was wrecked at Buenos Ayres.

Lloyd's List, Friday, 12th September 1823;

" Buenos Ayres, 18th June. On the 12th inst.....the brig Candidate, Bacon, from the Cape Verdes, with a cargo of salt, took the ground in mid channel, between Point del Indio and the Ortez Bank, bilged, and was abandoned by the master and crew, who arrived here yesterday ... Lighters have today been sent down to the Candidate, to endeavour to save some of the stores."
