The Candidate was a brig built by T.& J. Brocklebank at Bransty, Whitehaven, launched in June, 1820. Her early voyages were to Brazil under the command of Capt.J.Bacon, and in her third year of service she was wrecked at Buenos Ayres.

On the 13th June 1823 the Candidate arrived at Buenos Ayres from the Cape Verdes, with a cargo of salt. She grounded mid-channel between the Ortez Bank and the Cap del Indio, was bilged, and then abandoned by the crew in the boats. The crew arrived at Buenos Ayres on the 17th, and subsequent attempts were made to salvage some of the brig's cargo.
