From the Cumberland Pacquet and Ware’s Whitehaven Advertiser, Tuesday, 1st February 1842, page 3:

“ On Saturday last, a very handsome new barque, of 297 tons old measurement, and 318 new, was launched from the building yard of Messrs.T.and J.Brocklebank, at this port, and named the Lanercost, after the celebrated Cumberland-bred race-horse. The Lanercost is a splendid vessel, copper-fastened and coppered to the bends, and finished in all respects in a manner worthy of the high reputation her builders have so long enjoyed. Her stern and head-rails contain numerous sporting emblems, grouped with good taste, and executed in a most masterly manner by Mr.Askew, jun., of this town. The Lanercost is destined we believe for the southern trade under the command of Captain Adamson, late of the London, belonging the same ownery, and is destined, we would gladly hope, to enjoy as glorious, honourable, and successful a career as that which has marked the upward progress of the splendid animal after which she is named.”
The Lanercost was kept as part of the Brocklebank fleet until 1869, when she was sold to Charles Ralph.

NB. Another Cumberland vessel of the same name, Lanercost, was built at Harrington.
