Tigris
Official Number
1079

The Tigris was a ship built by Thos.& Jno. Brocklebank, launched at Whitehaven on Tuesday, 19th January 1836.

Launch report from the Cumberland Pacquet & Ware's Whitehaven Advertiser, Tues., 26th January 1836:

" A splendid new ship of nearly 500 tons register measurement was launched from the building yard of Messrs.Brocklebank at this port on Tuesday last, called the Tigris, and intended we understand for the East India trade. This launch took place about nine o'clock in the evening. The unusual hour for such an undertaking drew together an immense number of spectators, who lustily cheered the majestic structure as she glided towards her destined element. Mr.Anthony Bell acted a sponsor of the occasion. The operation we should consider a somewhat hazardous one to be performed with torch-light, but not the least accident happened, and the vessel was got safely into the harbour the next tide."
Unusually for a large vessel, the Tigris managed to avoid being listed in Lloyd's Register of Shipping for her whole career, which ended in 1865, the vessel being wrecked near Manilla.
