The Cumberland Pacquet and Ware's Whitehaven Advertiser, Tuesday, 6th June 1866, page 6;
" SHIP LAUNCH - On Tuesday morning last, there was launched from the
shipbuilding yard of Messrs.J.Shepherd & Co., a vessel which for
excellence of construction and neatness of finish, will rank with any
of the smaller class of vessels that have ever been issued from the
once noted shipbuilding port of Whitehaven. The onlookers of the launch
were a mere handful as compared to those present on former occassions.
A quarter to eleven o'clock was the time appointed for the launch, and
a few minutes before eleven, the order "down daggers" was given, but
the vessel, from some cause or other, refused to obey the summons. In
about five minutes, however, she gathered way, and glided gracefully
"into the ocean's arms", while simultaneously a hearty cheer, which was
taken up by those on board the ship, arose from the onlookers. The
vessel received the name of the Elizabeth Kelly, at the hands
of Mrs.Kelly, and was soon afterwards moored in her berth at the North
Wall, where her graceful and clean appearance was highly commended. She
is built by Messrs.Shepherd & Co., for Captain Thomas Kelly, of
this town. She is 84 feet in length, 21 feet in breadth, 12 feet 6
inches deep, and registers about 135 tons. She is brigantine-rigged and
carries Pinkins and Collins' patent reefing topsails, and will class A1
at Lloyd's for nine years. She is intended for the Pomaron trade, and
will be commanded by Captain Jones, late of the Aerial. After
the launch the owners and their friends partook of refreshments, and
many were the wishes utterred that success would attend the Elizabeth Kelly."
The Elizabeth Kelly was a brigantine built in May 1866 by Shepherd and Leech at Whitehaven. She was owned initially by Thomas Kelly, later by W.R.Kelly of Whitehaven. She ended her career owned in Ireland by John Kearns, and was probably broken-up as there is no record of her being wrecked.
