Erato

The Erato was a brig built at Whitehaven by Lumley Kennedy & Co. She was launched on the 9th March 1864, the final vessel built by Kennedy before the shipyard was taken over by Shepherd & Leech.

The Erato was lost on a voyage from Pomaron to Liverpool in January 1866. Amongst those lost with her were Bernard Sheridan, 18 years, and Thomas Cowman, 17 years, both of Whitehaven.

The Times, Wednesday, 28th February 1866, page 12;

" MISSING SHIP.-The Erato, of Whitehaven, Essery, sailed from Villa Real on the 28th of December for Liverpool, and has not since been heard of. A boat marked "Erato, of Whitehaven" was picked up on the 26th of January off the Lizard. "
