The Magellan was a full-rigged ship, launched from the Whitehaven shipyard of Lumley Kennedy & Co. on the 22nd February 1860.
From the Cumberland Pacquet and Ware’s Whitehaven Advertiser, Tuesday, 28th February 1860, page 5:
“ LAUNCH.- On the morning of Wednesday last, a beautiful clipper ship was launched from the building yard of Messrs.Lumley Kennedy and Co., of this port. The ship, as she gracefully glided from the stocks into the sea, was named the Magellan, and we trust will justify the expectation formed of her capabilities, by being a fast sailer, &c. The Magellan is classed A1 for 13 years at Lloyd’s; her tonnage is 622 ½ , builders measurement, and 613 tons register; and she is built with poops to the rail, and top-gallant fore-castle……...She is fitted with all the recent improvements, including Cunningham’s patent self-reefing topsails. Her build was greatly admired by the crowds assembled to witness the launch. She has been purchased by Messrs.Nicholson and M’Gill, of Liverpool, and is, we believe, intended for the West-coast trade. This is the fourth vessel purchased of Messrs.Kennedy by the same firm.”The vessel was described as a barque from 1874, and was owned in Wales and registered at Liverpool. She was sold to Norwegian owners in about 1887, registered at Fredrikstad and renamed Lines Brothers. She was still listed in the shipping registers in 1900.
