New Margaret

Official Number
14359

The New Margaret was a ship built by Lumley Kennedy & Co. at Whitehaven, launched on the 1st July 1844.

The Cumberland Pacquet and Ware's Whitehaven Advertiser, 2nd July 1844, page 3;

"A splendid new vessel called the New Margaret was yesterday launched from the building yard of Messrs.Lumley Kennedy and Co., at this port, burthen per register N.M. 411 tons, and O.M. 355. She is the property of William Alexander, Esq., Underwriters' Row, Liverpool, will stand A1 at Lloyds' for 12 years, is intended for the China Trade, and will be commanded by Captain W.Ager, late of the Orixa. She is ship-rigged, with poop to the rail and topgallant forecastle deck, and has a beautiful female bust head, with a richly carved taffrail and imitation galleries."

The first voyage of the New Margaret was from Liverpool to Hong Kong and Whampoa. She made voyages to Australia and to India later in her career, which seems to have lasted until 1874, when she disappeared from Lloyd's Register, probably sent for breaking. She seems to have been owned by members of the Alexander family throughout her life.
