The Orontes was a brig, launched from the Whitehaven shipyard
of Lumley Kennedy &
Co. on the 1st October 1856. She was owned in Whitehaven for her entire career.
The Orontes departed from Cardiff for Lisbon early in January
1870, under the command of Capt.J.Trohear. She then sailed for the
Guadiana river and picked up a cargo of sulphur ore, leaving Villa Real
for Liverpool on the 22nd February. She was never seen again, and was
posted "Missing" in June. The Energy, also of Whitehaven, had recently been lost on a voyage from Pomaron, in December 1869.
