Tanaro

Official Number
44226

The Tanaro was a brig built at Whitehaven by Lumley Kennedy & Co., launched on the 29th July 1862. She was owned and registered at Whitehaven throughout her career.

The Tanaro operated in the Spanish ore trade to the Guadiana river in the 1870's. Bound for Huelva from Newport in November 1876, the brig must have been lost close to her destination, either wrecked or sunk by collision. An identifiable part of the wreck came ashore at Huelva in February 1877.

The Times, Friday, 16th February 1877, page 8;

" DISASTERS AT SEA : Lloyd's Committee have requested information regarding the brig Janaro (sic), which sailed from Newport for Huelva on the 16th of November and has not been seen since. No re-insurance can be effected on this vessel, but very little doubt of her loss is entertained. She was a wooden brig of 140 tons, built at Whitehaven in 1862, classed A1 at Lloyd's."
