The Calabar was an iron barque built at the Williamson shipyard at Harrington in February 1864. She was the first vessel owned by Peter Iredale, the Maryport shipowner who later owned the Peter Iredale, Ada Iredale and Dovenby. Her masters were Capt.John Napton, Capt.S.J.Wilding (1868) and then Capt.J.Dawson.

The Calabar, bound from Pernambuco for Queenstown or Liverpool, was abandoned at sea on the 14th May 1872, in latitude 13S, the vessel sinking and with water over her decks. The crew were picked up by the Alaska and landed at Boston, USA.
