Six vessels were built at Workington for the Lamport & Holt line. Their first vessel was the Christabel, built by James Alexander in 1845, and then five others were built by Charles Lamport himself, namely the Cathaya, Blencathra, Coniston, Glaramara and Chalgrove.

The Chalgrove was a 509 ton barque built by Charles Lamport at Workington in December 1862. She was the last of the six ships to be built for Lamport & Holt at Workington.

In 1885 the Chalgrove was registered at London, and by 1890 was owned by Bevan, Evans & Co. In 1895 the Chalgrove was owned at Lillesand, Norway, by H.J.Larsen.
