Dovenby

Official Number
63334

The Dovenby was an iron ship built in January 1871 by Williamson at Harrington. She was owned by Peter Iredale & Co. of Liverpool, and her maiden voyage was from Newport to Portland, Oregon, with a cargo of steel rails. Her next voyage took her from Liverpool to Yokohama, returning to Amsterdam with a rice cargo. In 1883 and 1884 she took emigrants from Liverpool to Moreton Bay, Australia.

The Dovenby was still owned by Peter Iredale & Sons when she was sunk by collision with the steamship Argomene on the 18th August 1890.

The Times, Tuesday, 26th August 1890, page 8;

" DISASTERS AT SEA :- Lloyd's agent at Pernambuco telegraphs that the British ship Argomene, from San Francisco for Queenstown,  has put into Parahyba, having been in collision with the Dovenby. The later vessel sank and seven of her crew drowned. The stem of the Argomene is damaged and a small portion of her cargo jettisoned. The Dovenby left Antwerp on July 3 for Valparaiso."
