Lawrence

Official Number
25864

The Lawrence was a barque built at Harrington in 1832. In 1857/8 she was registered at Liverpool, her owners being Robinson & Co.

The Lawrence was grounded on a reef or sandbank off the east coast of Flinders Island, whilst seeking shelter from a severe gale on the 29th August 1865. She was bound from Newcastle, NSW, to Adelaide with a coal cargo, under the command of Capt.Barneson and with a crew of ten others. The crew made attempts to get the vessel off, including discharging some of her cargo. However, by the following day the vessel was still stranded and the crew abandoned her in their own boats, taking refuge on Flinders Island. Over the next few days they attempted to salvage as much gear as possible, but by the 4th September the Lawrence was under water and was breaking up. No lives were lost in the wreck.
