Mountain Laurel

The Mountain Laurel was an iron barque built at the Williamson shipyard at Harrington in 1866. In her early years she was owned by Sprott & Co. and was registered at Liverpool. In 1895 she was registered at Sandefjord, Norway, owned by H.C.A.Mitchelson.

On passage from Barrow-in-Furness to Seydisgord (Iceland) with a coal cargo, the Mountain Laurel was sunk on the 22nd June 1918 by a torpedo from a German submarine (UB73) , 25 miles off Rathlin Island. No warning was given by the submarine, and eleven crew were killed.
