Skiddaw

Official Number
27165

The Skiddaw was built at Workington in 1852, and was a full-rigged ship. She was registered at Liverpool and was owned, like the later tea clipper Scawfell, by Rathbone Brothers. The Skiddaw made her maiden voyage from Liverpool to Rio de Janeiro under the command of Capt.Charles Turner Sloman. He died of yellow fever at Bahia in March 1853, probably on the return journey.

In Lloyd's Register masters of the Skiddaw are named as Capt.J.Williams (1863), Capt.Hopson (1864-65) and Capt.Marshall (1866-68).

The Skiddaw was owned by Mr.J.Storm, of Whitby, at the end of her career. In September 1879 she was reported to be at Hayti, with only the boatswain and one seaman aboard, five of the crew, including the master, dead from yellow fever, and three others in the hospital. She was probably sold at Hayti. Renamed Amazone, she was owned by Capt.J.C.Rohde, of Stralsund, Germany.
