The Layton was a barque built at Lancaster in 1814. Lloyds Registers (Source 1) record that she was sheathed in copper in 1835 and then yellow metal in 1839, indicating she was involved in deepwater sailing. In these years she was registered at London and owned by J.Somes. In 1835, under Capt. G.Wade, she sailed for New South Wales. In 1839 her master was named as Capt. Austin.
